Retired IAS officer Navneet Sehgal has resigned from his position as Chairman of Prasar Bharati, nearly a year after his appointment in March 2024. Sources indicate that Sehgal submitted his resignation on December 2, 2025, before completing his three-year tenure, which has since been accepted by the Ministry of Information and Technology. Sehgal belongs to the 1988 batch of the Uttar Pradesh cadre.
A commerce graduate turned public servant, Sehgal told a media outlet that he initially trained as a Chartered Accountant but chose a career in public service to contribute to social development and help people.
During his bureaucratic career, Sehgal held several key positions in Uttar Pradesh, working with former Chief Ministers Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav. In 2007, he was appointed Chief Secretary under Mayawati, overseeing twelve departments simultaneously. Under Akhilesh Yadav, he played a pivotal role in the Agra-Lucknow Expressway project and served as CEO of the Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA). Following the Muzaffarnagar riots in 2013, he was reinstated as the head of Information and Public Relations.
Sehgal also worked closely with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, handling media management during the 2020 Hathras case and coordinating communication during the COVID-19 crisis in Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, he contributed to the branding and planning of major investment events, including the 2018 Investor Summit and the 2023 Global Investors Meet.
As Prasar Bharati Chairman, Sehgal introduced several initiatives, including expanding DD Free Dish reach and launching the organization’s OTT platform, ‘WAVES,’ in November 2024, offering free access to Doordarshan content, including classics like Ramayan and Mahabharat.
Sehgal’s resignation comes at a time when his extensive 35-year experience in administration and media management has made him a notable figure, and experts suggest he could be appointed to another significant role or even enter the political arena.
Recently, Sehgal’s son Shiv Sehgal’s wedding in Lucknow was attended by prominent leaders including CM Yogi Adityanath, Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, BSP leader Satish Chandra Mishra, and others, reflecting Sehgal’s wide-ranging professional and political connections.
