What Is NEET SS Counselling — and Who Is Eligible?
For the uninitiated, NEET SS (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test — Super Speciality) is India's centralised entrance examination for admission to post-doctoral super speciality medical programmes — the highest tier of clinical medical education in the country.
A total of 34,551 candidates cleared the NEET SS exam and will now appear in the Super Speciality Counselling. The NBEMS conducted the NEET SS exam on December 26 and 27, 2025, and the NEET SS result 2025 was released on January 23, 2026. ANI News
Through NEET SS counselling, the MCC conducts admission for the 100% All India Quota (AIQ) seats of Super Speciality in online mode — granting admission to DM, MCh and DrNB super speciality courses. Business Today
The NEET SS counselling 2025 is conducted for admission to 2,447 DM and MCh seats. Business Today These are among the most sought-after, most competitive, and most career-defining seats in Indian medicine — including Neurology, Cardiology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology, Endocrinology, and dozens of other super specialities at AIIMS, PGI Chandigarh, CMC Vellore, and other premier institutions.

Registration Fee — How Much Do You Need to Pay?
Candidates who have obtained the NEET SS cut-off will apply by paying an application fee of ₹5,000. Amar Ujala
This fee is non-refundable — it is a registration fee, not a security deposit. Pay it only after confirming your eligibility and readiness to participate in the counselling process. A separate security deposit may also be required at the time of seat allotment — confirm this from the official MCC information bulletin available at mcc.nic.in.
How Choice Filling Works — And Why It Determines Everything
Here is the single most important thing every NEET SS candidate must understand: your seat allotment is entirely determined by the choices you fill, not just your rank.
The process of NEET SS counselling includes registration, exercising of choices and locking of choices, seat allotment processing, announcement of results, reporting and document verification at the allotted college. Seat allotment in NEET SS counselling depends on different factors — the NEET SS score, filled preferences, and the availability of seats and courses in the college. Rewa Riyasat
This means a candidate with a higher rank who fills choices carelessly may end up with a less preferred seat than a lower-ranked candidate who strategically prioritises the right college-course combinations.
Choice filling strategy tips for NEET SS 2026:
- Fill as many valid choices as possible — do not leave the list short out of overconfidence
- Prioritise by specialty first, then institution — super speciality training quality varies significantly between institutes
- Do not skip government colleges even if private seems more accessible — AIQ seats in government colleges are high-value and should be explored
- Lock your choices before the deadline — if choices are not locked manually, they lock automatically at 11:55 PM on March 16, which may not reflect your preferred order
- Check the seat matrix on mcc.nic.in before finalising choices — available seats by college and speciality change each round
What Happens After Choice Filling — The Full Road to April 10
After the choice filling window closes on March 16, MCC processes seat allotment and releases the Round 1 seat allotment result. Candidates allotted seats must report to their allotted college for document verification within the specified joining period. Rewa Riyasat
If a candidate is not satisfied with their Round 1 allotment, they can opt to participate in Round 2 NEET SS counselling for an upgraded seat. After Round 1 ends, if seats remain vacant, fresh candidates — both those who did not register in Round 1 and those who did not report — must register again for Round 2. Rewa Riyasat
The Super Speciality Academic Session 2025 is scheduled to commence on April 10, 2026 Asianet Newsable — giving the MCC a tight but workable timeline to complete both counselling rounds and facilitate physical reporting at colleges before the academic year begins.
Documents You Must Keep Ready Right Now
Do not wait until seat allotment to organise your documents. Gather all of the following immediately — delays at document verification have cost candidates their allotted seats in previous years:
- NEET SS 2025 Admit Card
- NEET SS 2025 Result / Scorecard
- MBBS Degree Certificate or Provisional Certificate
- MD/MS Degree Certificate or Provisional Certificate
- Internship Completion Certificate
- MCI / NMC Registration Certificate
- Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) — if applicable, must be from a competent authority
- Identity proof (Aadhaar Card / Passport)
- Passport-size photographs (recent, multiple copies)
- State domicile certificate (if applicable for state quota seats)
Round 2 — What If You Miss Round 1 or Are Not Satisfied?
The NEET SS Round 2 counselling registration will be conducted between March 26 and March 27, 2026. Asianet Newsable
Candidates who are not allotted a seat in Round 1, candidates who reported and joined in Round 1 and submitted willingness for upward updation, and candidates who did not report in Round 1 and took exit with forfeiture are eligible for Round 2 — though fresh candidates re-registering will need to pay the fee again. ANI News
However, do not plan to skip Round 1 deliberately. Top-choice seats at premier institutions — AIIMS Delhi, PGI Chandigarh, NIMHANS, CMC Vellore — fill up in Round 1. By Round 2, the best seats are already gone.
Opinion: India's Super Speciality Crisis — Too Few Seats, Too Many Brilliant Doctors
The NEET SS counselling process — efficient, transparent, and merit-driven — is one of Indian medical education's genuine success stories. But the 2,447 seats available for 34,551 qualified candidates reveals a ratio that should alarm India's healthcare policymakers.
That is approximately 14 qualified doctors competing for every single DM or MCh seat. India produces extraordinary post-graduate medical talent — and then has no institutional infrastructure to give that talent the advanced speciality training it deserves and the country desperately needs.
India's super speciality doctor-to-population ratio is among the lowest of any major economy. The solution is not to make NEET SS harder — it is to dramatically expand the number of accredited super speciality training seats at government medical colleges, district hospitals, and AIIMS campuses across the country.
Until that happens, 32,000 brilliant MD and MS doctors will register for NEET SS counselling every year — and 30,000 of them will walk away without a seat.
