SRCC Launches Centenary Celebrations with Curtain Raiser, Reflects on Role in India’s Economic Leadership

Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), one of India’s most prestigious institutions for commerce and economics education, formally began its centenary celebrations on Friday with a Curtain Raiser ceremony at the University of Delhi’s North Campus. The event marked the start of a year-long programme commemorating SRCC’s 100-year journey from 1926 to 2026 and reaffirmed its role in shaping India’s economic, administrative and policy leadership.

The ceremony was presided over by University of Delhi Vice-Chancellor Prof Yogesh Singh, who attended as Chief Guest, alongside Ajay S. Shriram, Chairman of the SRCC Governing Body. Senior academicians, policymakers and distinguished alumni from across sectors were present, reflecting the institution’s wide national influence.

Paying tribute to founder Sir Shri Ram, the visionary industrialist who established the institution as The Commercial School in the pre-Independence era, the programme highlighted SRCC’s evolution alongside India’s economic growth. A commemorative coffee table book, Timeless Frames, documenting the college’s legacy from Daryaganj to its current North Campus home, was released during the event.

Addressing the gathering, Prof Singh described SRCC as a globally recognised academic brand whose impact extends well beyond rankings. Linking India’s recent emergence as the world’s fourth-largest economy to the role of strong institutions, he said colleges like SRCC have been central to producing economists, entrepreneurs and policymakers who have shaped the country’s growth trajectory. He urged the institution to focus its next phase on entrepreneurship, business incubation and emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and digital finance.

Ajay S. Shriram, in his address, said the centenary was both a moment of reflection and a roadmap for the future. Emphasising SRCC’s people-centric strength, he outlined priorities including academic excellence, research expansion, AI-enabled learning, sustainability, inclusion and deeper alumni engagement. He also paid tribute to late Arun Jaitley for his long association with the college.

Welcoming the guests, SRCC Principal Prof Simrit Kaur said the centenary belonged to generations of faculty, students, staff and alumni who had built the institution’s ethos. She reiterated the college’s commitment to ethical leadership, responsible business practices and national service.

Eminent alumni, including Justice A.K. Sikri, Sminu Jindal, Vijay Goel, Neeraj Ghei and Sunit Sethi, shared reflections on SRCC’s formative role in their professional journeys. Sangeeta Jaitley recalled the late Arun Jaitley’s deep attachment to the college and its influence on his public life.

The ceremony concluded with the illumination of the heritage campus and a cultural presentation, symbolising the beginning of SRCC’s next century as a key contributor to India’s academic and economic landscape.
