21 US Lawmakers Urge Trump to Repair Ties with India, Warn Tariffs Could Push New Delhi Toward China, Russia

Washington D.C., 17 hours ago – On October 8, 21 US lawmakers, including Deborah Ross and Ro Khanna, sent a letter to President Donald Trump urging him to mend strained relations with India. They warned that heavy tariffs on Indian goods are harming US-India ties and could drive India closer to China and Russia.

The lawmakers highlighted that tariffs make goods more expensive for Americans and hurt companies on both sides. They emphasized India’s importance as a trading partner, noting that the US imports electronics, pharmaceuticals, and energy from India, while Indian investments in the US create jobs. A 50% tariff, including a 25% hike due to India’s purchase of Russian oil, could impact Indian exports worth ₹5.4 lakh crore and reduce demand for products like clothing, jewelry, furniture, and seafood by up to 70%.

The letter stressed that US-India friendship is special, rooted in shared democratic values, and crucial for strategy, trade, and regional peace, especially as India plays a key role in the Quad alliance.

Trade negotiations between India and the US, ongoing for several rounds, have faced delays. Key issues, particularly in agriculture, remain unresolved, with India reluctant to open its dairy and genetically modified crops markets to US exports
