From Boycott India to Welcome Modi: Maldives President Muizzu Softens Stance

Once a vocal China supporter and critic of India, Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu has shifted tone, now welcoming PM Modi. Despite past rhetoric, Indian helicopters and military aircraft continue operations in the Maldives.

India-Maldives Relations: It was just two years ago when the current President of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, was all out against India during the election campaign. China-loving Muizzu gave the slogan 'India Out' in the national elections of Maldives in 2023. This campaign of Muizzu was against the presence of Indian soldiers in Maldives. Then he had said that as soon as he comes to power, he will return the Indian soldiers present in Maldives. He had raised the issue of presence of Indian companies in the Maldives elections. After becoming the President, changing the tradition of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu went to Turkey on his first visit in December 2023, then in January 2024 he visited China. Whereas in Maldives, there was a tradition that the new head of state used to visit India first.

After Mohamed Muizzu became the President, the relations between India and Maldives became very bitter. After this, Boycott Maldives started trending in India. The result was that Indians stopped going to Maldives and Maldives started incurring losses of billions of rupees every month. Its economy started sinking. There came a time when Maldives' foreign exchange reserves were left with only 440 million dollars. In such a situation, India helped Maldives.
