China–Japan Tensions Escalate After Tokyo Signals Military Support for Taiwan

Tensions between China and Japan escalated sharply this week after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Tokyo would deploy its military if a Chinese attack on Taiwan threatened Japan’s security. The remarks, made in Parliament on 7 November, triggered a strong backlash from Beijing, which called the statement provocative and “irresponsible.”

The dispute intensified further when China’s Consul General in Osaka, Xue Jian, posted on X that those interfering in the Taiwan issue would “have their necks cut.” The comment prompted both nations to summon each other’s ambassadors. China has also issued a travel advisory warning its citizens against visiting Japan, citing safety concerns.

Japanese officials say any conflict around Taiwan poses a direct threat because the island lies just 110 km from Japan’s southwestern territory. Tokyo argues that Chinese military operations or naval deployments during such a crisis would jeopardize Japan’s security and disrupt vital sea lanes.

Amid rising tensions, Japanese authorities reported Chinese Coast Guard vessels near the Japan-controlled Senkaku Islands on Sunday, leading Japan’s Coast Guard to push the ships out of the area. The United States reiterated that the Japan–US security treaty applies to attacks on the islands, confirming Washington’s commitment to defend Japan.

China has also paused the release of certain Japanese films, a move Chinese state broadcaster CCTV described as a “cautious” decision in light of the domestic situation. Chinese state media accused Japan of meddling unnecessarily in the Taiwan issue and warned of broader regional consequences if Japanese forces intervene.

Both governments have issued security advisories. Tokyo urged its citizens in China to avoid crowded areas and remain cautious following rising anti-Japan sentiment in local media. Beijing advised Chinese students and travelers to reconsider trips to Japan, citing what it called a deteriorating security environment.

The escalating rhetoric underscores long-standing tensions over Taiwan and the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, a chain of uninhabited islets claimed by China but administered by Japan. With Chinese incursions into the surrounding waters and airspace continuing, both militaries remain on heightened alert as diplomatic friction deepens.
