Canadian PM credits Trump for bringing peace between India: Mark Carney calls Trump ‘transformative president’

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday praised US President Donald Trump and credited him with establishing peace between several countries, including India and Pakistan.

"You have been a transformative and special president. You have transformed the economy, increased defense spending from NATO countries, and restored peace from India-Pakistan to Azerbaijan-Armenia," Carney said during a conversation at the White House.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has arrived in the United States for the second time this year. He is accompanied by Canadian Trade Minister Dominic Le Blanc, Foreign Minister Anita Anand, and Industry Minister Melanie Joly.

Speaking to the press in the Oval Office with Carney, Trump joked that Canada and the United States could merge. Carney dismissed the joke, saying he supported Trump's Gaza-Israel peace plan and that Canada would help.

Carney thanked Trump and called him a special president, saying he weakened Iran.

Trump claimed that his tariff power prevented a war between India and Pakistan. He said, "If I didn't have the power of tariffs, four out of seven wars would still be going on. There was tension between India and Pakistan, and seven planes were shot down. My words were very effective."

Trump has claimed nearly 50 times since May that he brokered peace between India and Pakistan. However, India has rejected any third-party mediation. The State Department said that direct talks between Indian and Pakistani military officials led to the ceasefire on May 10.

Trump praised Carney and joked that the Canadian PM had made him very famous. He said, "We've had a good relationship from the beginning, but we have some minor disagreements that we'll resolve."

Trump said that tariffs will also be discussed in today's talks, but did not say whether the tariffs imposed on Canada will be lifted or not.

Trump mentioned the Gaza War and said that peace could be achieved there. His team is working there and many countries around the world are behind his peace plan. He said that something big could happen, but until then, the US and Canada will work out some trade agreements.

When asked about the ongoing shutdown in America, Trump said that he will take care of his employees, but there will be separate arrangements for some people who are not well.

Trump described trade with Canada as difficult because of some disagreements between the two countries. Nevertheless, he said he loves Canada and its people.

Trump said the two countries' relationship has improved significantly, and they will resolve these disagreements. Regarding steel tariffs, he said he wants to produce his own steel, but also wants to benefit Canada.
