Cyprus dispute: India responds to Erdogan’s UN remarks on Kashmir

Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, during his weekly press conference on Friday, addressed several key international issues, including the Cyprus dispute, Jammu and Kashmir, and recent statements made by NATO Chief Mark Rutte.

Turkey has occupied the northern part of Cyprus since 1974, leading to decades of dispute and tension in the region.

Regarding Jammu and Kashmir, Jaiswal responded to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan raising the matter at the UN three days prior.

He reiterated that India’s position on Kashmir has been 'completely clear for the past 10 years' and remains unchanged.

Jaiswal informed that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently held discussions with the Foreign Minister of Cyprus, focusing on resolving the longstanding Cyprus issue in accordance with United Nations rules.

MEA rejects NATO

On recent comments by NATO Chief Mark Rutte, who claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had discussed the Ukraine war with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Jaiswal firmly rejected the assertion.

Jaiswal also addressed India’s domestic and international priorities, stating that the government will continue to take necessary measures to ensure affordable electricity for its citizens while safeguarding national security. He clarified that no such conversation took place between the two leaders and urged NATO to issue statements with greater care.

The NATO chief had previously claimed that US tariffs on India were affecting Russia and suggested that India had approached Russia regarding its strategy in the Ukraine war.
