Delhi Court Grants Umar Khalid 14-Day Interim Bail to Attend Sister’s Wedding

A Delhi court on Thursday granted former JNU scholar and 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy accused Umar Khalid a 14-day interim bail to attend his sister’s wedding later this month, according to reports by Bar and Bench.

Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai allowed Khalid to remain out of jail from December 16 to December 29. While approving the request, the court noted the family nature of the occasion and imposed strict conditions on his release.

The order stated:

“Considering the fact that the marriage is of the real sister of the applicant, the application is allowed… The applicant is granted interim bail from 16.12.2025 to 29.12.2025 on furnishing a personal bond of ₹20,000 with two sureties of the like amount.”

As part of the bail terms, Khalid has been instructed not to use social media and to interact only with family members, relatives, and friends. He must remain either at his home or at the venues where the wedding ceremonies are scheduled to take place.

Khalid had sought bail from December 14 to 29, informing the court that his sister’s wedding will be held on December 27.

Arrested in September 2020, Khalid faces charges of criminal conspiracy, rioting, unlawful assembly, and several provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots. He had earlier been granted a seven-day interim bail in December 2024 to attend his cousin’s wedding.

The development comes just days after the Supreme Court reserved its judgment on regular bail pleas filed by Khalid and five other co-accused on December 10.

Senior Advocate Trideep Pais, assisted by Advocate Sanya Kumar, appeared for Khalid in the present application.
