Dhaka Protests Over Lord Ram Image Desecration and Tallest Statue Row

Thousands of Hindus protested in Dhaka over alleged desecration of Lord Ram’s image linked to the proposed tallest statue in Gaibandha. Protesters issued a 72-hour ultimatum and released an eight-point charter demanding minority protection.

Thousands of Hindus took to the streets in the Bangladeshi capital on Saturday, protesting the alleged desecration of a Lord Ram image amid ongoing tensions over the construction of what is planned as the country’s tallest statue of the deity. Organised by the United Sanatani Society, the torchlight march from the National Museum area to the National Press Club saw protesters chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and demanding swift action against those responsible.

The demonstrations highlight growing concerns within the Hindu community regarding the protection of religious sites and minority rights in Bangladesh.

Ultimatum Issued to Authorities

Protesters issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the government, warning that failure to arrest the culprits behind the alleged incident would lead to the submission of a memorandum to the Ministry of Religious Affairs on Sunday. According to organisers, the protest was triggered by reports of a violent mob placing a shoe on a statue of Lord Ram at a temple construction site in Polash Bari, Gaibandha district.

Local reports indicate that work on an 81-foot-tall Lord Ram statue and associated temple had been halted following unrest by extremist groups. A case has reportedly been filed, but no arrests have been made so far, fuelling anger among community members.

ight-Point Charter of Demands

Leaders of the United Sanatani Society, representing various Hindu religious, social and cultural organisations, presented an eight-point charter. Key demands include the arrest and punishment of those involved in the desecration, strict measures against hate campaigns on social media, enhanced security for temples and religious institutions, and the formation of a minority protection commission.

They also called for an impartial investigation into the incident and stronger steps to prevent communal violence and religious discrimination. Addressing the gathering, speakers emphasised that such acts could undermine communal harmony and urged the government to ensure the safety of minority communities.

Background of the Statue Controversy

The row centres on Polash Bari in northern Bangladesh, where efforts to build a grand Ram temple and the towering statue have faced opposition. Community members expressed deep dissatisfaction over the delay and the alleged insult to their faith. In a notable assertion, protesters declared plans to construct Ram temples in all 64 districts of Bangladesh, signalling a broader push for greater visibility of Hindu religious infrastructure.

The United Sanatani Society announced further actions, including a possible meeting with the Prime Minister and additional rallies, to press their case.

Calls for Protection of Minorities

Organisers stressed that attacks on religious sentiments pose a serious threat to social cohesion. They demanded better safeguards for temples and urged authorities to address online offensive content targeting Hindu beliefs. The torchlight procession drew significant attention in Dhaka, with participants highlighting the need for justice and equality.

This is not the first time religious sensitivities have sparked unrest in the country, where the Hindu minority has occasionally raised concerns over security and preservation of their heritage sites.

Situation Remains Tense

As the 72-hour deadline looms, officials are yet to issue a detailed response on the arrests or investigation progress. The protests come at a time when Bangladesh continues to navigate complex communal dynamics, with calls for dialogue gaining ground among civil society groups.

The government faces the challenge of balancing law and order with the expectations of minority communities seeking reassurance. Further developments are expected in the coming days as the memorandum is prepared and potential talks are initiated.

For now, the streets of Dhaka have echoed with demands for dignity and protection, reflecting deeper undercurrents in the nation’s pluralistic society.
