Dog Walking Banned in Over 20 Iranian Cities: Strict Action on Rule Breakers

Iran bans dog walking in over 20 cities, citing cultural and safety concerns. Authorities warn of strict action against violators. The decision sparks debates over its implications and enforcement.

Keeping in mind social order and security, Iran has banned dog walking in more than 20 cities. According to a report by Tehran-based Faraz News, the cities where the ban has been imposed include Kermanshah, Ilam, Hamadan, Kerman, Borujerd, Robat Karim, Lavsanat and Golestan.

Similar bans were first imposed in the capital Tehran in 2019, leading to further criticism among citizens. Iranian officials have claimed that walking dogs is a threat to people's health. They also argue that walking dogs can lead to security issues.

Action being taken against dog owners
However, they have not given any specific information about this move. According to reports, officials are taking action against dog owners who violate the ban, leading to arrests and resistance. The reformist newspaper Etemad on Sunday quoted an official in the city of Ilam as saying that legal action would be taken against violators.

There were no other updates in the report. Iran's state-run newspaper said the move was aimed at maintaining public order, ensuring security and protecting public health.

Why is dog walking banned in Iran?
The ban is imposed through local directives and police orders as no national law has been passed. However, there are certain articles in Iran's penal code and constitution that enable authorities to impose such restrictions, which are Article 638 on public morality, Article 688 on threats to public health and Article 40 of the constitution, which prohibits causing harm to others.
