Four Indian-origin students were injured in a knife attack at a university dormitory in Russia’s Bashkortostan Republic on Saturday night, with one victim reported to be in serious condition. Russian authorities have arrested the alleged attacker, a 15-year-old boy, and launched a high-level investigation into the incident.
The stabbing occurred at a dormitory of the State Medical University in Ufa, the capital of Bashkortostan. According to preliminary findings released by Russia’s Interior Ministry, the teenager entered the residential facility armed with a knife and attacked several occupants. Among those injured were four Indian students enrolled at the university.
The Indian Embassy in Moscow confirmed the incident in a post on social media platform X, stating that officials from the Consulate General of India in Kazan have been dispatched to Ufa to assist the affected students and coordinate with local authorities. The embassy said all injured Indian students are receiving medical treatment, adding that one remains in critical condition under close medical supervision.
Russian officials said the suspect resisted arrest, during which two police officers sustained stab injuries. “The attacker offered active resistance while being detained and inflicted bodily harm on himself,” Interior Ministry spokesperson Major General Irina Volk said. The suspect was subsequently overpowered and admitted to a local children’s hospital in serious condition.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive for the attack. Investigators are examining the suspect’s background, mental health history, and possible grievances, while also reviewing CCTV footage and witness statements from the dormitory. Law enforcement agencies have increased security around the campus as a precautionary measure.
The State Medical University administration said it is cooperating fully with investigators and has offered support to students affected by the incident. University officials also assured families that additional security arrangements are being put in place at student hostels.
The incident has raised concerns among the Indian student community in Russia, where thousands of Indian nationals pursue medical and technical education. Indian diplomatic officials said they are in regular contact with Russian authorities to ensure a transparent investigation and adequate care for the injured.
Local authorities in Ufa described the attack as an isolated incident and said there is no ongoing threat to public safety. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses, including whether charges will be filed under Russia’s criminal code related to attempted murder and assault on law enforcement personnel.
The condition of the injured students will continue to be monitored, officials said, as diplomatic and university authorities work to provide assistance to those affected.
