India Likely to Finalize S-500 Deal During Putin’s Visit: Nine Key Agreements Expected
Digital Desk
Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives in India today for a two-day official visit, marking his first trip to the country since 2021. The visit coincides with heightened global attention, as the United States recently imposed a 50% tariff on India, citing New Delhi’s continued oil trade with Russia.
The agenda of the India-Russia Summit includes strengthening defence, energy, and technological cooperation. Officials indicate that India may finalize a deal for the advanced S-500 air defence system, alongside talks on acquiring additional S-400 systems. In total, nine major agreements are expected to be signed during the summit.
The summit aims to bolster bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030, with discussions spanning oil imports, space exploration, nuclear energy, science and technology, and port development. A skill development agreement is also anticipated, allowing Indian professionals to work in Russia across engineering, medical, and technical sectors.
Defence ties remain a cornerstone of the partnership. India has integrated Russia’s S-400 system into its indigenous defence network, the Sudershan Chakra, which proved decisive during Operation Sindoor, intercepting missiles and Pakistani aircraft with a 100% success rate. The Indian Air Force also operates over 200 Russian-made fighter jets, with discussions on acquiring Su-57 stealth jets expected to advance. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited already supports maintenance of Russian aircraft in India, easing operational integration of new systems.
Energy cooperation is another critical area. India imports discounted Russian crude, but payments have faced challenges due to international pressure. A new rupee–ruble or digital payment mechanism may be announced to ensure continuity. Additionally, Russia may invite India to invest in Arctic oil and gas projects, further strengthening strategic energy ties.
President Putin is accompanied by seven ministers and the governor of Russia’s central bank. During the visit, a closed-door meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled at ITC Maurya Hotel in Delhi. Observers expect up to 25 agreements to emerge from the talks, reinforcing the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” between the two nations.
