Israel launches airstrike in Southern Gaza despite ceasefire

Israel carried out airstrikes in the southern Gaza Strip on Sunday, despite the ongoing ceasefire agreement that has been in place since October 9, according to a report by the Associated Press (AP).
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the operation targeted weapons storage sites, firing positions, terrorist cells, and Hamas infrastructure.
Medical sources cited by Al Jazeera confirmed that three Palestinians were killed and several others injured when an Israeli airstrike hit the Nuseirat refugee camp. Since the ceasefire began less than two weeks ago, at least 51 people have died in Israeli attacks across Gaza.
Israel cites attack on troops; Hamas denies involvement
The latest strike followed Israeli claims that its troops in Rafah came under fire from Hamas militants. However, Hamas denied any involvement, asserting that it remains committed to the ceasefire terms.
Netanyahu calls for “strong response” to violations
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had held consultations with top security officials and ordered the military to take “strong action” against any breach of the truce, though he stopped short of threatening a full-scale return to war.
Ceasefire developments and hostage identification
The airstrike occurred just hours after Israel announced it had identified the remains of two hostages handed over by Hamas overnight. The victims were named as Ronen Engel, a father of three from Kibbutz Nir Oz, and Sonthaya Oakkharasri, a Thai agricultural worker from Kibbutz Be’eri—both believed to have been killed during the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on southern Israel.
Meanwhile, Hamas confirmed that talks for the second phase of the ceasefire negotiations have begun.
Palestinians allege multiple ceasefire violations
According to Palestinian officials, the Israeli military has violated the ceasefire 47 times since it came into effect earlier this month—resulting in 38 deaths and 143 injuries, Al Jazeera reported.
The escalating tensions have raised concerns that the fragile peace agreement could collapse, further undermining efforts toward a long-term resolution in Gaza.
