Japan’s Agriculture Minister Taku Eto Resigns Amid Controversy Over Rice Comments to Save Reputation

Japan’s Agriculture Minister Taku Eto resigned from his post on Wednesday following a controversial statement about rice. The comment sparked public outrage amid an ongoing severe rice shortage and soaring prices across the country.

What Did Taku Eto Say?
At a recent public event, Eto stated, “I have never needed to buy rice because my supporters keep giving me rice as gifts.”
This remark came at a time when rice prices in Japan are rising uncontrollably, making it difficult for ordinary citizens to afford. The statement triggered sharp criticism on social media and calls for his resignation.

Submitted Resignation to the Prime Minister
Facing mounting political and public pressure, Taku Eto submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, which was accepted immediately.
Speaking to reporters after stepping down, Eto said,
I made an extremely insensitive comment at a time when consumers are struggling with inflation. That statement was not befitting my responsibility. I apologize and retract my statement.”
He also clarified that he does purchase rice himself and does not solely rely on gifts.

Pressure on Government Intensifies; Opposition Closes In
Eto’s resignation is seen as a major blow to Prime Minister Ishiba’s minority government, which is already battling declining public support. Opposition parties had warned that if Eto did not resign voluntarily, a no-confidence motion would be brought against him.

Rice: The Heart of Japan’s Culture and Economy
In Japan, rice is not just a staple food but also a vital part of cultural and religious life. It is offered to gods in Shinto rituals and is the main ingredient in traditional dishes like sushi, onigiri, and mochi.
Rice cultivation forms the backbone of Japan’s rural economy, and the current crisis has forced people to look for alternatives.

Who Will Take Over the Agriculture Ministry?
According to media reports, popular former Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi may be appointed as Eto’s successor. This could also be an opportunity for the government to improve its public image.
