Jimmy Kimmel Live! taken off Air after Charlie Kirk Remarks, Trump hails “Great News”

American late-night host Jimmy Kimmel has been pulled off the air after a monologue about the recent shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. ABC, owned by Disney, confirmed that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be “pre-empted indefinitely,” following a similar move by Nexstar, which owns numerous local ABC affiliates across the United States.

Controversial Monologue Sparks Backlash

In the episode that aired earlier this week, Kimmel sharply criticised Republican figures particularly those aligned with the MAGA movement—for allegedly politicising Kirk’s shooting. “We hit some new lows over the weekend,” Kimmel declared, accusing critics of twisting the tragedy to score political points rather than showing genuine grief. According to the host, “they’re trying to avoid blaming one of their own,” a reference to the reluctance among some Republicans to acknowledge internal extremism.

Mocking Trump’s Reaction

Kimmel also took aim at former President Donald Trump, comparing Trump’s public sadness over Kirk’s death to “how a 4-year-old mourns a goldfish.” While Kimmel allowed that Trump’s grief appeared “genuine,” he argued it was quickly overshadowed by partisan finger-pointing and sensational headlines.

Network Pulls Plug

Hours after the episode aired, Nexstar announced it would cease broadcasting Jimmy Kimmel Live! “for the foreseeable future.” Shortly thereafter, ABC confirmed the show’s indefinite suspension but offered no timeline for its return. Disney has yet to comment on whether the hiatus will lead to any long-term changes in the show’s format or content.

Trump Praises Cancellation

Responding on his Truth Social platform, Donald Trump lauded ABC’s decision: “Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED. Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done,” he wrote. Trump’s post quickly generated thousands of engagements, amplifying the debate over late-night comedy’s role in American politics.

Free Speech vs. Responsibility

Online reaction has been sharply divided. Supporters of Kimmel defend his monologue as a legitimate exercise of free speech, while critics accuse him of crossing a line by mocking a tragic death. Media analysts predict that the controversy will intensify discussions about editorial freedom, network accountability, and the evolving relationship between politics and entertainment.

As of now, neither ABC nor Disney has announced when Jimmy Kimmel Live! will resume airing. Viewers and industry insiders alike will be watching closely to see whether this marks a temporary pre-emption or a turning point for late-night satire.
