Massive Explosion Rocks US Military Explosives Plant in Tennessee; 18 Missing
Digital Desk
A powerful explosion devastated a military explosives manufacturing plant in rural Tennessee on Friday morning, leaving twisted metal, burned-out vehicles, and at least 18 people missing and feared dead, officials said.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis described the scene at Accurate Energetic Systems as one of the worst he has ever seen. “There’s nothing left to describe. It’s gone,” he said, noting that three local families were directly affected. While multiple deaths have been confirmed, the sheriff did not provide an exact count, referring to the missing individuals as “souls” as families were still being notified. Initially, 19 people were reported missing, but the number was updated after one person thought to be at the site was found safe at home.
Explosion Details
The blast occurred around 7:45 a.m. local time (6:15 p.m. IST). Aerial footage showed smoke and smoldering debris scattered over at least half a mile. Residents reported feeling the explosion more than 15 miles away.
The plant, located in the Bucksnort area, about 60 miles southwest of Nashville, operates an eight-building facility nestled in wooded hills. The exact number of employees present during the explosion is unknown.
Emergency Response
Emergency crews initially could not enter the facility due to ongoing detonations. By Friday afternoon, officials reported that the situation was under control with no further risk of explosions, according to Grey Collier, spokesperson for the Humphreys County Emergency Management Agency.
Investigators are working to determine the cause, though no official explanation has been released.
Company Statement
Accurate Energetic Systems, based in nearby McEwen, expressed condolences on social media:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and community impacted. We extend our gratitude to all first responders working tirelessly under difficult conditions.”
The company supplies munitions and explosives to the US Army and Navy, including bulk explosives, landmines, breaching charges, and C4.
Local Impact
Residents in nearby Lobelville, about a 20-minute drive from the plant, reported their homes shaking. Gentry Stover said:
“I thought the house had collapsed around me. About 30 seconds later, I realized it had to be the explosion.”
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee is monitoring the situation and urged residents to pray for the affected families. State Representative Jody Barrett highlighted concerns about the economic impact, as the plant is a major local employer.
A small vigil was held Friday night at a nearby park, with people praying for the missing and singing “Amazing Grace.”
