Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded Sweden’s prestigious Royal Order of Polar Star, Commander Grand Cross, during his two-day visit to the Nordic country, marking the 31st international honour conferred on the Indian leader.

The honour, presented during Modi’s official visit to Sweden, is considered the country’s highest distinction for a visiting head of government. The visit also saw delegation-level talks between Modi and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson focused on expanding bilateral cooperation across trade, technology, climate action and strategic sectors.

Warm Reception In Gothenburg

Modi arrived in Gothenburg on May 17 at the personal invitation of Kristersson. Swedish Gripen fighter jets escorted the Prime Minister’s aircraft as it entered Swedish airspace, underlining the significance attached to the visit.

Kristersson personally received Modi at the airport before the two leaders proceeded for official engagements and bilateral meetings.

The visit marks Modi’s first trip to Sweden since the 2018 India-Nordic Summit and comes amid growing engagement between India and European nations on economic and strategic issues.

Strategic Partnership Push

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, both sides held comprehensive discussions aimed at reviewing the full spectrum of India–Sweden relations while identifying new areas for long-term strategic cooperation.

Officials said the talks covered future-oriented sectors including green transition technologies, artificial intelligence, start-up ecosystems, resilient supply chains, clean energy, climate action and space cooperation.

India and Sweden currently share bilateral trade valued at around $7.75 billion in 2025, according to official figures. Swedish foreign direct investment into India has reached nearly $2.825 billion between 2000 and 2025.

Officials indicated that fresh discussions were held around expanding investments in manufacturing, green technology, mobility solutions and innovation-driven sectors.

The two countries are also exploring ways to strengthen cooperation between start-ups and small technology firms, an area that has seen growing traction over the past few years.

Netherlands Visit Before Sweden

Before arriving in Sweden, Modi concluded a two-day visit to Netherlands, where India and the Dutch government elevated bilateral ties to a strategic partnership.

The Prime Minister described the outcomes of that visit as a “historic breakthrough” in India–Netherlands relations.

According to officials, the two sides agreed to expand cooperation in sectors including semiconductors, water management, defence, sustainability, innovation and mobility.

The Sweden leg of Modi’s Europe visit is expected to further reinforce India’s diplomatic and economic outreach across the continent.
