PM Modi’s greetings to Dalai Lama anger China; says India should “understand the seriousness”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended birthday greetings to the Dalai Lama, which drew a sharp reaction from China. Beijing expressed strong displeasure, stating that India should “fully understand the anti-China nature of the Dalai Lama” and act cautiously on such matters.

China has lodged a protest with India over Prime Minister Modi's birthday greetings to the Dalai Lama and the presence of Indian officials. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said that India should understand the sensitivity of issues related to Tibet and recognize the anti-separatist nature of the Dalai Lama. It also stressed that New Delhi should fully understand Beijing's sensitivity on issues related to Tibet.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said in a media briefing here that China's position on matters related to Tibet is consistent and clear and is in front of everyone.

Mao was responding to questions about Prime Minister Modi's greetings to the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday and the presence of senior Indian officials at his birthday celebrations.
