PM Netanyahu Criticizes UN Recognition of Palestine

PM Netanyahu condemned countries recognizing Palestine at the UN, calling it a “very dangerous step” and asserting that Palestine will never become a nation.

Australia, Canada, and Britain recognized Palestine as an independent nation on Sunday. Other countries, including France and Belgium, have also agreed to recognize Palestine. French President Emmanuel Macron has also stated that his country will soon recognize Palestine as a nation. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Joseph Carney wrote on the social media platform X on Sunday, "Since 1947, Canada has supported the two-state solution and wants Palestine and Israel to live together in peace and security. Today, Canada recognizes the State of Palestine and offers its participation in establishing lasting peace in the Middle East."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that recognizing Palestine as a nation is a very dangerous step and that Israel will respond against it at the UN. He said that a further decision will be taken after a cabinet meeting. Netanyahu stated that Israel will respond only after his return from the United States next week. He said that those who recognize Palestine are rewarding terrorists. He stated that Palestine will never become a nation.

Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to travel to New York on Wednesday. He will then travel to Washington to meet with President Donald Trump. The two are scheduled to meet on Sunday, and he will then return home next Wednesday. India has also supported the two-state theory at the UN. The British Prime Minister said, "Today, the UK has formally recognized Palestine as a nation, reviving hope for peace for Palestinians and Israelis and a two-state solution."

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, in a statement announcing the recognition of Palestine, said that Australia on Sunday recognized Palestine as an independent and sovereign nation. Australia did so to fulfill the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people to self-governance.

This is part of the international community's efforts to achieve a two-state solution, including a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages abducted on October 7, 2023. He said today's move symbolizes Australia's long-term commitment to a two-state solution, which is the only path to peace between Israel and Palestine and security in the region. It is noteworthy that out of the 193 countries in the United Nations, more than 145 countries, including India, have already recognized Palestine as a nation.
