SC Gives "Green Signal" to Trump's Plan to Dismantle U.S. Education Department
The U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for President Trump’s initiative to cut over one-third of the Education Department's staff—1,400–1,900 positions—advancing his long-standing agenda to eventually abolish the agency and transfer control to states.
The US Supreme Court has cleared the way for President Donald Trump to completely abolish the Department of Education. The court approved the Trump administration's appeal, which canceled the lower court's order to rehire 1,400 employees. Three judges of the court opposed this decision.
The Supreme Court, the highest court of the US, has cleared the way for President Donald Trump to completely abolish the Department of Education.
The conservative judges of the court on Monday approved the Trump administration's appeal, under which the lower court's order to rehire 1,400 employees of the Department of Education was canceled. This decision has given Trump a free hand to abolish the Department of Education.
However, three liberal judges of the court strongly opposed this decision. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, in her dissenting note, called it "intolerable".
Justice Sonia said that this decision gives the President the power to abolish laws because he can hollow out the department by removing essential employees. Along with her, Justice Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson have also called this decision a threat to the separation of powers of the Constitution.
