Trump Sparks Global Backlash by Sharing ‘Greater America’ Map Claiming Greenland, Canada as US Territory

US President Donald Trump has triggered fresh international controversy after sharing a map on social media depicting Greenland and Canada as part of an expanded United States, intensifying diplomatic unease across Europe and North America. The post, shared on Trump’s Truth Social platform, labeled Greenland as a “US Territory, EST. 2026,” reviving and escalating his long-standing push to bring the autonomous Danish territory under American control.

The image showed Trump in the Oval Office alongside several NATO leaders, paired with a stylized map of a so-called “Greater America.” In a separate post, Trump was depicted with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio planting a US flag in Greenland, signaling what appeared to be a symbolic assertion of future sovereignty.

The remarks and imagery come as Trump renews arguments that Greenland is critical to US national and global security because of its strategic Arctic location, growing geopolitical competition, and natural resources. He has repeatedly claimed that Russia and China are expanding their presence in the Arctic and that Denmark lacks the capacity to adequately defend the vast territory—assertions that Copenhagen and NATO allies strongly dispute.

Speaking ahead of the World Economic Forum 2026 in Davos, Trump accused European countries of ignoring NATO warnings for decades about security risks in the Arctic. “Greenland is imperative for national and world security. There can be no going back,” he wrote, adding that he had discussed the issue with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

Trump also reiterated controversial comments about Canada, once again floating the idea of it becoming the 51st US state. He argued that the United States loses billions in trade with Canada and claimed Ottawa would benefit from joining the Union. Canadian officials have firmly rejected the suggestion, calling it baseless and diplomatically inappropriate.

The Danish government and Greenland’s leadership responded swiftly, reaffirming that Greenland is not for sale and that its future will be decided by its people. European leaders warned that such expansionist rhetoric risks undermining alliance unity and straining transatlantic relations at a time of heightened global instability.

Experts note that Greenland’s importance stems from its location between North America and Europe, its role in missile surveillance via the US-run Thule Air Base, and its potential reserves of rare earth minerals, oil, and gas. Melting Arctic ice has also opened new shipping routes, further increasing strategic competition in the region.

While Trump has framed his push as a matter of security and economic necessity—and even linked it to frustrations over missing out on a Nobel Peace Prize—analysts warn that the rhetoric could deepen diplomatic rifts and raise questions about US commitment to established international norms.
