Trump's New Student Visa Rule Scares Indian Students: Why Are They Deleting Social Media Accounts?

There is a lot of concern among Indian students planning to study in America at this time. This happened because the administration of US President Donald Trump has made social media check mandatory before approving visas for international students.

An internal cable from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the social media posts of those applying for visas will be checked before allowing them to enter the US.

This step has been taken amid a widespread action against international students after protests by Palestinian supporters at an American university last year. After this decision, concern has spread among Indian students planning to study at an American university and now they have started deleting their social media posts.

Indian students are not only removing posts from social media for the Trump administration's decision to check social media accounts, but some are also deleting their social media accounts.

Why are students deleting social media accounts?

According to a report by India Today, a student named Manya (name changed), who was selected for a master's program at an Ivy League university, has deleted her Instagram and LinkedIn profiles. Manya's visa counselor had warned her that her political posts could pose a threat to her visa application.

Mamta Shekhawat, founder of Grading.com, said that even a small hint of political activism can lead to a US visa being rejected.
