The United States has issued a security alert for its citizens in Bangladesh ahead of the country’s national elections and a referendum scheduled for February 12, warning of possible political violence and extremist attacks during the polling period. The advisory was released by the US Embassy in Dhaka, citing heightened risks around election-related activities.
According to the alert, violent incidents could target political rallies, polling stations, and places of religious significance, including churches, temples, mosques, and other religious sites. The embassy cautioned that even gatherings intended to remain peaceful could quickly escalate into confrontations, urging American citizens to exercise heightened vigilance.
The advisory comes at a time when Bangladesh has witnessed political tensions during past election cycles. While the embassy did not point to any specific threat, it said the volatile pre-election environment warranted precautionary measures to ensure personal safety.
The US Embassy advised its citizens to avoid demonstrations, large crowds, and political gatherings, and to remain alert in public spaces. “Situations can change rapidly,” the advisory noted, adding that individuals should closely monitor local media for updates and follow instructions from local authorities.
In parallel, the Government of Bangladesh has announced restrictions on transportation between February 10 and February 12 as part of its security arrangements for the elections. These measures may affect road and public transport services across several regions. The US Embassy also informed that it will operate with limited onsite services on February 11 and 12 due to security considerations.
As part of its guidance, the embassy outlined several precautionary steps for US nationals, including maintaining a low profile, staying aware of surroundings, carrying a fully charged mobile phone at all times, and reviewing personal security plans. Travelers were also advised to plan alternative routes in case of road closures or disruptions during the election period.
For emergency assistance, the US Embassy in Dhaka has shared a dedicated helpline number, +88 02 5566 2000, for American citizens in Bangladesh. Additionally, US nationals can contact the State Department’s Consular Affairs office at 888-407-4747 or 202-501-4444 for support from outside the country.
The embassy said it will continue to assess the security situation and issue updates as necessary. US citizens have been encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time alerts and make it easier for authorities to locate and assist them in an emergency.
