Ukrainian President Zelensky warned that no deal should be made without Ukraine’s involvement before the Trump-Putin talks in Alaska.
There will be no unilateral deal on the Ukraine issue. US President Donald Trump will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Earlier, Ukrainian President Zelensky and the EU leader have clearly refused a unilateral peace deal.
According to CNN news, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a virtual summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders, expressing fears that Russia could influence Trump to agree to conditions in its favor.
The leaders of Ukraine, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Finland, NATO and the European Union attended this summit. After this, Zelensky and the German Chancellor spoke to reporters in Berlin on Wednesday.
Sources revealed that Trump talked about an unconditional ceasefire and called it a goodwill gesture from Russia.
Agreement on five common principles
Zelensky said that at the summit, the leaders decided on "five common principles" for the talks to be held in Alaska. These emphasized ceasefire and "reliable" security guarantees.
Zelensky said, "Every issue related to Ukraine will be decided only with Ukraine. We have to prepare for trilateral talks. First of all, a ceasefire is necessary."
Need for strictness on Russia
Zelensky warned that if a ceasefire is not agreed upon by Friday, then sanctions against Russia will have to be tightened further. He said, "Along with peace efforts, it is necessary to maintain pressure on Russia."
Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance participated in a major meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing", in which the issue was further discussed. This meeting to be held in Alaska can now prove to be a turning point for Ukraine-Russia tensions.
