Best Desk Exercises for Indian IT Employees Working From Home
Sandeep Patel
Simple desk exercises and movement breaks can help Indian IT employees stay active while working long hours from home.
Working from home has made professional life more flexible for millions of Indian IT employees, but long hours at a laptop can also mean fewer opportunities to move during the day. Back-to-back meetings, extended screen time and prolonged sitting can make it easy to spend most of the working day in the same position.
The answer does not necessarily have to be a long workout. Simple movements performed between meetings or during short breaks can help break up extended periods of sitting and make a home-office routine more active.
Start with regular movement breaks
One of the easiest habits is to avoid remaining seated continuously for several hours. Employees can stand up between meetings, walk around the room while taking a phone call or spend a few minutes away from the desk after completing a task.
Short movement breaks can also be built into the work calendar. A reminder every 30 to 60 minutes can prompt employees to stand, stretch or walk briefly.
Shoulder and neck movements
People who work on laptops often spend considerable time with their head and shoulders positioned towards the screen.
Gentle neck movements can be incorporated into breaks. Slowly turning the head from side to side, looking up and down within a comfortable range, and rolling the shoulders backwards can provide a simple movement routine.
These exercises should be performed gently rather than with force, particularly around the neck.
Seated leg exercises
Desk workers can also keep their legs moving without leaving the workstation.
While sitting upright, employees can extend one leg at a time, hold it briefly and return it to the floor. Ankle circles and repeated heel raises are other simple movements that can be performed while seated.
These exercises are particularly convenient during short pauses between tasks.
Try standing exercises
A standing desk is not essential for introducing more movement into the working day.
Employees can stand during selected calls, perform gentle calf raises or take a few minutes to walk around the house. Bodyweight movements such as controlled squats can also be included if they are comfortable and appropriate for the individual.
The goal is to introduce movement rather than turn every work break into an intense workout.
Don't overlook the workstation
Exercise cannot completely compensate for an uncomfortable workstation. The screen should be positioned so that employees do not have to constantly bend their necks, while the chair should provide adequate support.
Keyboard and mouse placement also matters. Frequently used equipment should be within easy reach so that employees do not repeatedly stretch or twist to use it.
Make movement part of the workday
For India's work-from-home IT workforce, the most practical exercise routine may be one that fits naturally around professional commitments.
A few minutes of walking, stretching and simple bodyweight movements spread throughout the day can be easier to maintain than relying entirely on a single workout before or after office hours.
Anyone with an existing injury, persistent pain or a medical condition should seek appropriate professional advice before starting a new exercise routine.
