Can Ghee Tame Frizzy Hair? Experts Weigh In on Weekly Application Claims

The use of ghee as a natural hair-care remedy is gaining attention on social media, with many users claiming that applying clarified butter twice a week for a month can significantly reduce frizz and improve hair texture. Hair specialists say the practice may offer short-term benefits, though results depend on hair type and application method.

According to dermatologists, frizz occurs when hair lacks moisture and the cuticle layer remains raised, allowing humidity to penetrate the strands. Ghee, which is rich in fatty acids and vitamins A, D and E, can act as an occlusive agent, sealing moisture into the hair shaft.

“Within two to three weeks of regular use, people with dry or coarse hair may notice smoother strands and reduced frizz,” said a Delhi-based dermatologist. “The fats in ghee coat the hair, making it appear shinier and more manageable.”

Hair-care professionals recommend applying a small amount of ghee to the scalp and hair lengths, gently massaging it in before washing. Leaving it on for 20 to 30 minutes and rinsing with a mild shampoo is considered sufficient. Excessive application or leaving it overnight may lead to greasiness and product buildup, especially for those with fine or oily hair.

Trichologists caution that while ghee can improve the look and feel of hair, it does not treat underlying causes of frizz such as heat damage, chemical processing or environmental stress. “Ghee works more as a conditioning agent than a treatment,” an expert noted. “It can temporarily smooth the cuticle, but long-term hair health still depends on proper nutrition, gentle styling and regular trimming.”

Those with sensitive scalps or dandruff are advised to conduct a patch test before use, as heavy oils may worsen scalp conditions if not washed out properly.

With interest in traditional and home-based beauty remedies on the rise, experts stress moderation and realistic expectations. Used twice a week over a month, ghee may help reduce dryness and frizz for some, but it should be part of a broader hair-care routine rather than a standalone solution.
