‘Homes should reflect Hindu values’: Mohan Bhagwat urges unity during Andaman visit

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday called for greater Hindu unity, saying cultural self-awareness must begin at home. Addressing a public gathering in Sri Vijay Puram, he said families should consciously reflect Indian civilisational values in their daily lives, posing a rhetorical question on whether homes should display icons such as Swami Vivekananda or Western pop figures.

Speaking at a programme organised by the Virat Hindu Sammelan Committee at Netaji Stadium, Bhagwat said national progress requires social cohesion and a shared sense of purpose. “To take the country forward, Hindus must unite and act with responsibility,” he said, adding that unity does not mean uniformity. “The world often believes unity demands sameness, but Hindu society has always thrived on diversity,” he noted.

Bhagwat stressed that global influence is shaped not only by ideas but also by collective strength. “The world listens to power. Strength comes from unity, and unity comes from mutual understanding,” he said, urging people to focus on solutions rather than remaining consumed by disputes.

Drawing from the Mahabharata, Bhagwat cited an episode involving Lord Krishna to underline the importance of wisdom over force. He said not every challenge requires confrontation, and effective solutions depend on assessing circumstances carefully.

Referring to India’s freedom struggle, Bhagwat appealed to citizens to stay connected with the nation’s history. Encouraging travel, he said Indians should also visit places like the Cellular Jail in the Andamans to understand the sacrifices made by freedom fighters who endured hardship without surrendering their ideals.

Bhagwat’s remarks came during his three-day visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, his first as RSS chief. The tour, which concluded on Saturday, included meetings with local RSS functionaries and participation in events linked to national icons. Earlier in the visit, Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled a statue of Veer Savarkar in South Andaman, underscoring the broader emphasis on cultural and historical remembrance during the programme.

The RSS chief reiterated that India’s path forward lies in social harmony, cultural confidence and disciplined collective effort.
