SEVERE HEATWAVE SWEEPS ACROSS INDIA: MERCURY SOARS TO 45.2°C IN PRAYAGRAJ

Multiple states grapple with dangerous temperatures; schools shut, labour work restricted

Extreme Heat Grips Nation as Temperatures Peak

The country is gripped by an intense heatwave, with mercury levels breaching critical thresholds across multiple regions on Friday. Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest temperature at 45.2 degrees Celsius, while several cities witnessed readings hovering around or above the 44-degree mark. The Meteorological Department has sounded a red alert across 60 districts for heatwave conditions and 17 districts for warm night warnings, signalling an escalating crisis as April temperatures continue their dangerous upward trajectory.

Temperature Records Shatter Across Five States

The intensity of the ongoing heatwave is reflected in widespread temperature extremes. Akola and Amravati in Maharashtra recorded 45°C and 44.8°C respectively, while Jharsuguda in Odisha hit 44.8°C. Across a span of just 24 hours, 14 cities distributed among Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, and other states crossed the 44°C threshold. In Odisha alone, 18 cities reported temperatures exceeding 40°C. The northern states remain particularly vulnerable, with heatwave alerts active in 11 districts of Madhya Pradesh and three districts of Himachal Pradesh, where Una witnessed a high of 41.1°C.

Labour Restrictions Imposed; First Death Reported

Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have imposed work restrictions for labourers in cities including Agra, Mathura, Firozabad, and Mainpuri, banning outdoor work between 12 pm and 4 pm. The stringent measure underscores the health risks posed by prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures. The situation turned tragic in Kanpur, where a 45-year-old man, Sunil Kumar, died of heatstroke—a stark reminder of the severe consequences of unchecked heat exposure. Rescue and medical teams across states have been placed on high alert to manage heat-related medical emergencies.

Educational Institutions and Public Life Disrupted

The severity of the heatwave has prompted widespread school closures and lifestyle adjustments. Odisha has announced the closure of all schools across the state from Monday as a precautionary measure. Schools in the Narmadapuram district of Madhya Pradesh have also been shuttered. In Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan issued an advisory urging residents to remain indoors between 11 am and 3 pm, characterising this period as a "self-lockdown." Such directives highlight the government's concerns regarding public health and heat-related vulnerabilities, particularly among children and elderly populations.

Weather System to Persist Through Weekend

The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted a continuation of dangerous weather patterns. On April 26, heatwave conditions are expected across parts of Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. Other regions including Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu may experience hot and humid conditions. By April 27, the affected zones will expand, with Bihar and Karnataka joining the heatwave-affected regions. Warm night conditions are also anticipated across portions of northern India, which could further strain cooling systems and public health infrastructure.

Emergency Cooling Measures Rolled Out

Across the nation, authorities and wildlife facilities have initiated emergency cooling measures. In Jaipur, coolers have been installed in elephant enclosures to provide respite to captive animals. Delhi residents have improvised, installing coolers in e-rickshaws for personal relief during transit. Zoos and wildlife parks, including Sarthana Nature Park in Surat and Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad, have deployed cooling interventions, administering glucose to animals and allowing increased water access to combat heat stress.

Health Outlook and Preparedness Push

With the forecast indicating sustained heatwave conditions through the coming week, health authorities have ramped up preparedness protocols. Medical facilities have been instructed to maintain heightened vigilance for heat-related illnesses including heatstroke, dehydration, and heat exhaustion. The Meteorological Department's red alert classification signals that forecasters expect conditions posing significant risk to the general population, particularly those engaged in outdoor labour, homeless populations, and individuals with pre-existing health complications. Public awareness campaigns emphasizing hydration, reduced outdoor exposure, and symptom recognition are underway across affected regions.
