1st ever lung transplant in the country

On October 23, a triple organ transplant was performed simultaneously at Kottayam Government Medical College in Kerala. This has become India's first government hospital where three organs - heart, lungs, and kidneys were transplanted on the same day.

This is also the first time that a lung transplant has been performed in a government hospital. Lung transplants are considered a very rare surgery in the country, even in private hospitals where organ donation is permitted.

Officials at Kottayam Medical College told Dainik Bhaskar that this is the first time in the country that a triple organ transplant, including a lung, has been performed in a government hospital on the same day.

Organ transplant process lasted 6 hours

The donated organs included the heart, lungs, both kidneys, pancreas, liver, one hand, and both corneas. Out of these, one kidney, the heart, and a lung were transplanted to patients at Kottayam Medical College.

The surgery started on Wednesday, October 22, at 8:30 PM and continued until 2:30 AM. After this, the organs were transplanted into other patients. The entire surgery was successfully completed by the afternoon of October 23.

Anish's wish fulfilled by family

These organs belonged to 38-year-old A.R. Anish, who died during treatment at Kottayam Medical College. Anish was an officer at Poojappura Central Jail in Thiruvananthapuram. On October 18, while returning from Sabarimala duty, he suddenly collapsed unconscious at the Pampa bus stand. He died on October 22 at Kottayam Medical College.

Anish had already expressed his wish to donate his organs after his death. After his death was confirmed, his family members, including his mother and sister, decided to fulfill his wish. State Health Minister Veena George expressed gratitude to the family for agreeing to organ donation even in their time of grief. The surgery was performed by Dr. Jayakumar and his team.
