45 bus fire incidents in three years killed 64 people, government tells Rajya Sabha

At least 64 people were killed and 145 injured in 45 incidents of buses catching fire while in motion across India over the past three years, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. The data was shared by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in a written reply, covering incidents reported in 2023, 2024 and 2025 up to December 10.

According to the ministry, 11 such incidents were recorded in 2023, resulting in one death. In 2024, the number rose to 20 incidents, claiming 31 lives. So far in 2025, 14 incidents have been reported, with 32 fatalities. The minister clarified that the October 24, 2025 bus fire in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, in which 20 people died, has not been included in these figures.

State-wise data shows Rajasthan reported six incidents but accounted for the highest number of deaths at 45. Maharashtra recorded nine incidents with one fatality, while Madhya Pradesh reported eight incidents and one death. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka each reported six incidents, resulting in two and one deaths respectively. Haryana reported one incident that killed 10 people, while Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha reported fewer cases. Six incidents with no fatalities were reported from Delhi, Assam and Gujarat.

Responding to concerns over passenger safety, Gadkari said the government has strengthened bus safety norms by updating AIS-119 standards. Fire extinguishers and an additional emergency exit have been made mandatory for all buses, while regulations governing fuel systems and electrical wiring have been tightened.

States have also been instructed to ensure safety equipment is installed even in older buses, and to complete and release accident investigation reports without delay.

The issue has gained urgency amid several major bus fire accidents in recent months, including fatal incidents in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. Officials said the ministry is working with state governments to improve compliance and reduce the risk of such tragedies in the future.
