Assam Leader Killed, Journalist Shot in Manipur; 6 Militants Held

Violence in the Northeast: A Thadu community leader was killed in Assam, a TV journalist shot in Manipur, while security forces arrested six militants.

 

Militants in Assam killed Thadu community leader Nehkam Jomhao who had participated in peace talks in Manipur. Police have arrested six accused and are investigating the reasons for the murder. The Thadu Students Union has termed the murder as condemnable.

Militants in Assam killed a Thadu community leader. He had recently participated in peace talks in ethnic violence-hit Manipur. Nehkam Jomhao was the president of the Thadu Literature Society of Assam. According to officials, he was abducted from his residence at Chonghang Veng in Manja area around 7.30 pm on Saturday. He was later killed.

Karbi Anglong Superintendent of Police Sanjib Saikia said six people have been arrested. The accused have confessed to the murder. Investigation is on to find out the reason for the murder. The headquarters of the Thadu Students Union has described it as a brutal murder and said that Jomhao was targeted for his courageous decision for peace.

TV journalist shot

Jomhao was part of the historic peace meeting held in Imphal on August 6, where Thadu Inpi Manipur, an organisation of the Thadu tribe, held talks with Meitei organisations. This was the first time that representatives of the Thadu community had entered the Meitei-dominated Imphal valley since the Manipur conflict began.

Meanwhile, according to PTI, a TV journalist was shot at in Manipur's Senapati district on Saturday while covering a flower festival. He suffered three bullet injuries. Injured Deep Saikia is being treated in a hospital. Police are investigating the motive behind the attack on the journalist.

Six militants arrested in Manipur

Six militants have been arrested from different districts of Manipur. Four cadres of the banned People's Liberation Army were arrested near the Myanmar border in Tengnoupal district on Friday.

A member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party was arrested from Sangaiprou in Imphal West district on Saturday. Assam Rifles have recovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition in Champhai district of Mizoram.
