SC Orders Aadhaar to Be 12th Document in Bihar SIR

In a significant decision, the Supreme Court directed that Aadhaar be included as the 12th valid document for the Social Impact Report (SIR) process in Bihar.
SC on SIR Before the Bihar elections, the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is hot. Giving relief to the voters of Bihar, the Supreme Court has ordered to include Aadhar card as the 12th document. The Election Commission had earlier released a list of 11 documents for citizenship certificate. The court said that Aadhar card is not a proof of citizenship.
With the Bihar elections approaching, the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is constantly gaining momentum. It is being claimed that the names of many people are out of the voter list. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has given a relief decision for the voters of Bihar. The Supreme Court says that Aadhar card can also be included as the 12th document.
The Election Commission had demanded all the citizens of Bihar to show citizenship certificate under SIR. For this, the Election Commission had released a list of 11 documents, by which citizenship can be proved. But now the Supreme Court has ordered to add Aadhar card as the 12th document.
While giving its verdict on SIR, the Supreme Court said that Aadhaar card can be included in the list. However, it cannot be considered as proof of citizenship. Therefore, if the Election Commission wants, it can check the authenticity and reality of the Aadhaar card.
List of 11 documents of Election Commission
Identity cards of employees working in central, state government and public sector undertakings, pension payment orders
Identity cards, documents issued by government, local authority, bank, post office, LIC and public sector undertakings before July 1, 1987
Birth certificate issued by competent authority
Passport
Matriculation and other educational certificates issued by recognized board, university
Permanent residential certificate
Forest rights certificate
OBC/SC/ST caste certificate issued by competent authority
National Citizen Register (where available)
Family register prepared by state/local authority
Any land/house allotment certificate of the government
Aadhaar is not proof of citizenship: SC
Let us tell you that the SIR process of the Election Commission was challenged in the Supreme Court. Earlier, while giving its verdict on this matter, the Supreme Court had said that Aadhaar card cannot be considered as proof of citizenship under the Aadhaar Act.
The Supreme Court still stands by its decision. However, Aadhaar card can be used in the absence of 11 documents suggested by the Election Commission, but the Election Commission will have the right to check its authenticity.
