Mob brutally assaults couple in Motihar

The victims — 18-year-old Rajeshwar Kumar, a driver, and his 17-year-old girlfriend — were rescued by police after a villager called the emergency helpline Dial 112. Both were taken to Sadar Hospital, where they remain in critical condition.

Relationship opposed by girl’s family

According to local sources, Rajeshwar and the girl had been in a relationship for over a year. Although they belonged to the same caste, the girl’s family strongly opposed their relationship.

Her family had reportedly tried to arrange her marriage twice earlier, but she refused both times. On Wednesday, she was forcibly engaged again, and when she resisted, her family allegedly assaulted her and threw her out of the house. That night, she called Rajeshwar for help.

Couple caught and assaulted

Rajeshwar searched for her through the night and found her near Marine Drive the next morning. As they were heading home, a group of youths, identified as Chandan and Kundan, caught them near Mission Chowk.

The mob then dragged the couple nearly a kilometre to the girl’s village, where dozens of villagers had already gathered. Both were beaten brutally; the girl was left unconscious, while Rajeshwar was tied by one leg and hung from a tree.
A disturbing video from the spot shows the mob surrounding the couple and repeatedly assaulting them as the girl lies motionless on the ground.

Police action and investigation

A villager who witnessed the attack informed the police, leading to the couple’s rescue. Muffassil SHO Ambesh Kumar confirmed receiving information about the incident, stating that legal action will be initiated once a written complaint is submitted.

During questioning, the girl said she met Rajeshwar on Instagram, where he made short videos, and their friendship gradually turned into love. Despite being from the same caste, her family continued to oppose the relationship — even though her elder sister had married outside it.

Both victims are currently under treatment, and police have launched an investigation into this heinous act of mob brutality.
