British National Escapes from Delhi Airport Immigration; Search Launched Across City

A British citizen escaped from the immigration area at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi on October 28, prompting a citywide search by law enforcement and security agencies. The individual, identified as Fitz Patrick, had arrived from Bangkok on Air India flight AI 333 and was scheduled to be deported to the United Kingdom via Thailand.

According to officials, Patrick managed to evade authorities while at the immigration area, triggering immediate action by the Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF), Bureau of Immigration, and Delhi Police. An FIR has been registered, and airport CCTV footage is being reviewed to determine the circumstances of his escape and identify any lapses in security.

Delhi Police has also begun questioning airline staff, while searches are ongoing at potential hiding spots across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), as well as on routes leading out of the city. Authorities are investigating Patrick’s background, motives for escaping, and whether he received any assistance. No photographs or detailed descriptions of the individual have been released so far.

In a related disruption at IGI Airport, more than 300 flights were delayed on Friday due to a technical malfunction in the air traffic control (ATC) system. According to reports, the Automatic Message Switch System (AMSS), which provides schedule and flight movement information, failed on Thursday evening. Controllers are currently operating manually, preparing flight schedules using pre-existing data, leading to takeoff delays of approximately one hour for several flights.

Security and aviation authorities have emphasised that efforts are underway to locate the absconding individual while maintaining airport operations safely. The incident has raised concerns over immigration area protocols, and officials are reviewing security measures to prevent similar breaches in the future.

The search continues across Delhi, with authorities urging anyone with information on Fitz Patrick’s whereabouts to come forward.
