From Protest to Public Outreach: TMC Launches 5,000 Voter Assistance Camps under ‘Banglar Vote Raksha’ Drive

Days after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) fiercely opposed the Centre’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the party has pivoted to direct voter outreach, rolling out more than 5,000 voter assistance camps across West Bengal under its “Banglar Vote Raksha” (Protection of Bengal’s Votes) campaign.

The initiative, launched on November 4, marks a strategic shift from confrontation to participation, with the ruling party now helping citizens navigate the very SIR process it had criticized as politically motivated.

At the July 21 Martyrs’ Day rally, Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to manipulate voter lists in Bengal through an “SIR-style” operation modeled on Bihar. On November 6, she led a public protest, declaring she would not fill out her own enumeration form until every voter was allowed to do so freely.

Under the Banglar Vote Raksha programme, TMC workers are running door-to-door drives at ward and anchal levels to assist people in filling out enumeration and voter enrolment forms. Each activity is digitally monitored through the party’s Didir Doot app to prevent wrongful deletions and ensure transparency.

Defending the campaign, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said it is the only organized voter support initiative among the 12 states undergoing SIR. “While the BJP spreads confusion in the name of revision, the TMC stands beside the people,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is set to hear petitions on November 11 challenging the legality of the SIR process amid allegations of voter roll manipulation.

TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has also formed a special “SIR Response Team” to visit families allegedly affected by the process and address public grievances in coordination with local units.
