Ahmedabad Tragedy: Gujarat Congress Leader’s Nephew Dies by Suicide After Accidental Shooting of Wife

A tragic incident unfolded late Tuesday night at NRI Tower on Judges Bungalow Road in Ahmedabad, where a young couple died following an accidental firearm discharge and a subsequent suicide, police officials said on Wednesday.

According to investigators, Yashrajsinh Durgeshsinh Gohil, a Class-I officer with the Gujarat Maritime Board and nephew of senior Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil, was critically injured after his wife, Rajeshwari Gohil, accidentally fired a revolver while handling it inside their apartment. Rajeshwari died on the spot, while Yashrajsinh later shot himself after learning of her death.

The incident occurred late on January 21, shortly after the couple returned home from a family dinner. Police said Yashrajsinh immediately contacted the 108 emergency service after the firearm discharged. When the medical team arrived, they confirmed that Rajeshwari had died due to the gunshot injury.

Officials said Yashrajsinh, reportedly in a state of shock after being informed of his wife’s death, then used the same firearm to end his life. Emergency responders attempted to revive him, but he was declared dead at the scene.

Yashrajsinh’s 60-year-old mother was present in another room of the flat at the time of the incident and is considered a key witness. Police stated that there were no signs of a domestic dispute prior to the incident. Family members and close acquaintances told investigators that the couple shared a cordial relationship and had been married only two months ago.

Vastrapur Police and the Crime Branch rushed to the location soon after receiving the alert. The premises of NRI Tower were sealed temporarily, and entry was restricted to residents as part of security and investigative measures. Senior police officials, including a Deputy Commissioner of Police, inspected the scene and supervised the inquiry.

Preliminary information indicates that the firearm was legally owned. Forensic teams have seized the weapon and are examining it to establish the exact sequence of events. Statements from family members, emergency responders, and building staff are being recorded.

Friends of the couple said they had recently visited a temple near Sola to fulfil a religious vow and were planning to travel abroad, with passport formalities underway. Yashrajsinh was known to have an interest in automobiles and firearms, but police said there was no record of substance abuse or prior psychological distress.

Authorities have registered an accidental death case and said further conclusions would be drawn after forensic and ballistic reports are received.
