Army Chief Calls Operation Sindoor a Model of Tri-Service Synergy, Says Forces Ready for Any Provocation

Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Tuesday described Operation Sindoor as a landmark example of tri-service coordination carried out under clear political direction, asserting that the armed forces were given complete operational freedom to act and respond. Addressing his annual press conference for 2026, the Army Chief said the operation remains ongoing and warned that any future provocation by Pakistan would invite a firm and decisive response.

General Dwivedi said Operation Sindoor reflected seamless coordination among the Army, Navy and Air Force, backed by multiple national agencies. “It was the best example of tri-service synergy with full freedom to act or respond,” he said, adding that the operation demonstrated India’s preparedness, precision and strategic clarity in dealing with cross-border terrorism.

The Army Chief acknowledged the contribution of several stakeholders beyond the armed forces. He credited the Central Armed Police Forces, intelligence agencies, state administrations, civic authorities and key ministries, including the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Railways, for their proactive support. “This whole-of-government approach ensured operational effectiveness and national readiness,” he noted.

Providing an update on the broader security environment, General Dwivedi said the situation on the northern front remained stable but demanded sustained vigilance. He pointed to renewed contacts and confidence-building measures that have helped ease tensions in certain sectors, allowing limited civilian activities such as grazing and medical camps near border areas. At the same time, he said Indian deployments along the Line of Actual Control remained balanced and robust, with continued focus on infrastructure development and capability enhancement.

Reflecting on the origins of Operation Sindoor, the Army Chief said the mission was conceptualised and executed following the Pahalgam terror attack, after a decisive call taken at the highest level. The operation began with a 22-minute initiation phase on May 7 and unfolded over 88 hours until May 10. According to General Dwivedi, the strikes reset strategic assumptions by targeting deep terror infrastructure and challenging long-standing narratives related to nuclear deterrence.

He said the Indian Army played a key role in destroying seven of the nine identified targets, forming part of a calibrated and measured response to Pakistan-backed terror actions. The operation, he added, sent a clear message about India’s resolve and capacity to act across domains.

General Dwivedi also reviewed the Army’s performance in 2025, expressing satisfaction with progress made under the ‘JAI’ framework—Jointness, Atmanirbharta and Innovation. These reforms, he said, were aligned with the Prime Minister’s strategic guidance, defence reforms initiated by the government and the Army’s long-term transformation roadmap.

Concluding his address, the Army Chief said the global rise in armed conflicts underscored the need for constant preparedness. “Nations that stay prepared prevail,” he said, reaffirming the Army’s readiness to safeguard national security.
