Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the state assembly on Tuesday that the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore was not an accident but a “clear case of murder.” Sarma said one individual directly caused the singer’s death, while several others assisted in the act. He emphasised that this was neither a case of negligence nor criminal conspiracy, but an intentional killing.
Sarma made the statement while responding to opposition parties, who had moved an adjournment motion to discuss Zubeen’s death. The Chief Minister revealed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed under the state CID, has so far arrested seven people, questioned 252 witnesses, and seized 29 items related to the case.
According to Sarma, charges of murder have been lodged against four to five of the arrested individuals. Zubeen Garg, 52, had died under suspicious circumstances on September 19 while swimming in the sea in Singapore. He was there to participate in the North East India Festival (NEIF). His death had sparked outrage across Assam, with more than 60 police complaints filed statewide.
Seven Arrests Made in Zubeen Death Case
Those arrested include NEIF organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen’s cousin and police officer Sandipan Garg, his manager Siddharth Sharma, and band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta. Police also detained Garg’s personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, after discovering financial transactions exceeding ₹1.1 crore in their accounts. All seven are currently in judicial custody.
