Assam PWD Engineer Dies by Suicide, Names 2 Seniors for Harassment Over Fake Bills

A shocking case has emerged from Assam where Joshita Das, a 29-year-old Assistant Engineer with the Public Works Department (PWD), died by suicide at her apartment in Bongaigaon on Tuesday. In her suicide note, Joshita accused two senior officials of harassment and pressuring her to approve fake bills for a government project.

Two Senior Officials Arrested

Police confirmed the arrest of the accused:

  • Dinesh Sarma Medhi, Executive Engineer (recently posted in Nalbari)
  • Aminul Islam, Sub-Divisional Officer (transferred to Kamrup)

Both were detained in Guwahati and produced before a Bongaigaon court on July 23.

What the Suicide Note Revealed

According to sources, Joshita wrote that she was mentally harassed over the construction of a mini stadium at Borsojgaon under Gossaigaon LAC. She claimed the officials forced her to approve inflated contractor bills despite serious irregularities.

Key allegations in her note:
The project by M/s Achetek Creations had no architectural plans or key records.
Contractor Rudra Pathak failed to appoint a site engineer, leaving her with all technical responsibilities.
Architect Debajit Sharma submitted an error-filled estimate, which she flagged, but no action was taken.

Family Blames Workplace Harassment

Joshita’s mother lodged a complaint, alleging constant workplace pressure drove her daughter to end her life.

“She often spoke about unbearable stress at work. It broke her mentally,” said her mother.
