ATM Cash Van Robbed of ₹7 Crore in Bengaluru

Bengaluru police have launched a major investigation after a gang posing as Reserve Bank of India (RBI) officials intercepted an ATM cash van and escaped with ₹7 crore on Wednesday afternoon. The heist took place around 12:30 pm when the vehicle was returning from an HDFC Bank currency chest in JP Nagar.

According to the FIR, the van operated by a cash management services (CMS) companyleft its office at 9:30 am and collected ₹7.11 crore from the bank around 12:24 pm. Minutes later, a group of five to six men approached the vehicle, identified themselves as RBI personnel, and ordered the staff to step out. The custodians and two security guards were then moved into an Innova car, while the driver was instructed to take the van ahead alone.

The gang fled with the cash-laden vehicle, which was found abandoned near the Jayadev Dairy Circle flyover around 1 pm. CCTV footage recovered from the vicinity shows a suspicious car trailing the van at 11:55 am, suggesting the robbers had been tracking the vehicle for some time.

Police have detained the driver, two security guards, and a cash custodian for questioning. Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh said investigators are examining the possibility of insider involvement, including the role of CMS employees. “The precision and timing of the operation indicate prior knowledge. All angles, including internal leaks, are being probed,” he said.

The robbery was completed in barely 30 minutes, raising concerns about the security protocols followed during high-value cash transfers. The Siddapura police have registered a case and multiple teams have been deployed to trace the suspects and recover the stolen money.

Authorities expect more clarity once the interrogation of personnel and analysis of CCTV footage are completed. The incident has renewed calls for stricter monitoring of private cash transport services operating in the city
