In a bid to enhance hygiene and passenger comfort, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has introduced a new facility for AC passengers on the Jaipur-Asarva Express. Starting Thursday, passengers in all AC classes on this route will receive blankets with printed covers as part of their bedroll kits.
The initiative, launched at Khatipura Jaipur Railway Station in Rajasthan, is a pilot project aimed at addressing concerns over blanket cleanliness and unpleasant odors. Previously, passengers were provided with an extra bedsheet to be used as a makeshift quilt cover. Now, the new dedicated blanket covers are expected to improve hygiene standards significantly.
Minister Vaishnaw stated that blankets have long been provided on trains, but doubts over their cleanliness persisted, as they were typically washed only once a month. This new step is intended to reassure passengers and elevate the overall travel experience.
If the pilot proves successful, the Railway Ministry plans to expand the blanket cover facility to AC coaches across the country. The Jaipur-Asarva Superfast Express (Train No. 12981), which covers the journey in 11 hours and 55 minutes, will serve as the test route for the project.
Additional Upgrades in Rajasthan
Alongside the launch of the blanket cover service, the Railway Minister also inaugurated several infrastructure improvements in Jaipur. These include new platforms and a modern Passenger Information System. Platform heights have been raised at smaller stations within the Jodhpur, Jaipur, Ajmer, and Bikaner divisions. Additionally, upgraded signage and information displays have been installed to assist travelers.
The Railways have also refined their procurement processes to further improve passenger amenities. With AC coaches in one, two, and three-tier configurations, the addition of proper blanket covers is expected to enhance comfort, especially during colder months.
