Bomb Threat Emails Target Parliament, Schools in Delhi; Security Intensified Across Capital
Digital Desk
Security agencies were placed on high alert on Monday after bomb threat emails were sent to Parliament and at least nine schools across the national capital, prompting evacuations and extensive anti-sabotage checks. The emails claimed that an explosion would take place inside Parliament at 1:11 p.m. on February 13 and warned of plans to “turn Delhi into Khalistan,” officials said.
According to police, the threatening emails were received by schools in different parts of Delhi between 8.30 a.m. and 9 a.m. The messages referred to the threats being issued “in memory of Afzal Guru” and were purportedly sent in the name of a group calling itself the “Khalistan National Army.” Authorities said the content of the emails is being treated as a serious security concern, though no explosive material has been found so far.
Emergency response mechanisms were immediately activated. The Delhi Fire Service said fire tenders, bomb disposal squads and dog squads were rushed to the affected schools as a precaution. Students and staff were evacuated, and thorough searches of the premises were conducted. Senior police officials said security was also reviewed at other sensitive locations, including Parliament, following the threat.
The schools that reported receiving the emails include Loreto Convent School in Delhi Cantonment, Cambridge School in Srinivaspuri and New Friends Colony, The Indian School in Sadiq Nagar, DTEA School in INA, Venkateswara Global School, CM Sri School and Bal Bharati School in Rohini, and Air Force School in Lodhi Road. Officials said all institutions followed standard safety protocols, and classes were disrupted while checks were underway.
Cyber units of the Delhi Police have been tasked with tracing the origin of the emails and identifying those responsible. “We are examining the technical details, including IP addresses and routing information, to establish the source,” a senior officer said, adding that appropriate legal action would follow.
In a related development, similar bomb threat emails were sent to civil courts in Patna and Bhagalpur in Bihar. The messages claimed that RDX devices had been planted in judges’ chambers and washrooms. Court premises were evacuated as a precaution, and security was stepped up across judicial complexes in the state.
The incidents come close on the heels of a bomb threat scare in Chandigarh last month, when emails were sent to around 30 schools ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab. No explosives were found in that case either, but an FIR was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing and urged the public to remain calm while security agencies verify the threats.
