Bridge Collapse Over Indrayani River in Pune Claims 4 Lives, 18 Injured
Jagran Desk
A tragic incident unfolded in Maharashtra’s Pune district on Sunday afternoon, when a bridge over the Indrayani River collapsed near Kundmala village in Maval tehsil. The accident occurred at around 3:30 PM, resulting in the death of four people and injuries to at least 18 others. Rescue teams managed to save 41 individuals, though some are still reported missing.
According to officials at the site, the bridge gave way when a large number of tourists had gathered to witness the river’s strong current. Located just 30 kilometers from Pune and a popular weekend getaway, Kundmala attracts large crowds, especially on holidays.
Early assessments indicate the bridge was in a deteriorated state and was not designed to handle the heavy foot traffic and vehicles present at the time of the collapse. Witnesses reported that people were crossing with two-wheelers and motorcycles, which added to the excessive load on the weakened structure.
Local MLA Sunil Shelke initially stated that six people had died, but this was later updated by Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis and Pune Zone 2 DCP, confirming four fatalities. Two of the victims succumbed to their injuries during treatment at a hospital.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) continues the search operation for those still unaccounted for, as emergency services remain active at the scene.
Authorities are now facing scrutiny over infrastructure maintenance, especially as reports emerge about the bridge's poor condition before the incident.
