Cold Wave Intensifies Across Central India; IMD Issues Alert for 20 MP Districts Including Bhopal and Indore

A severe cold wave has gripped large parts of central India, with temperatures plunging sharply across Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jharkhand. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave alert for 20 districts of Madhya Pradesh, including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, and Jabalpur, as the chill continues to tighten its hold over the region.

The sudden drop in temperature follows fresh snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, leading to a cold air mass spreading across the northern plains. In Madhya Pradesh, several cities recorded a notable fall in night temperatures, with residents waking up to dense fog and icy winds.

According to IMD officials, “The cold wave is likely to persist over western and central Madhya Pradesh for the next 48 hours due to northwesterly winds and clear skies facilitating rapid cooling.” The department has advised citizens, particularly the elderly and children, to take precautions against exposure.

In Himachal Pradesh, three cities recorded sub-zero temperatures, while eight districts reported mercury levels below 5°C. Twenty-one towns across the hill state saw temperatures dip under 10°C, marking the onset of a prolonged winter phase. The state’s meteorological centre has warned that isolated areas may witness frost conditions in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Jharkhand too is experiencing a chilly spell. The IMD has issued a cold wave warning for six districts between November 10 and 12, as minimum temperatures dropped by 1–3°C across most parts of the state within 24 hours.

With the cold front moving steadily eastward, weather experts predict that much of central and eastern India could experience below-normal temperatures through mid-November, signaling an early arrival of winter this year.
