Confident Group Chairman CJ Roy Dies by Suicide During IT Raid in Bengaluru

CJ Roy, chairman of real estate firm Confident Group, died by suicide on Friday after allegedly shooting himself at the company’s office near Richmond Circle, Bengaluru, amid an ongoing Income Tax (IT) search operation. The incident occurred around 3:15 pm, police said, marking a shocking turn in a three-day investigation by the Kerala IT department.

According to Bengaluru police, no IT officials were present when the police arrived at the scene to begin their investigation. Roy’s body was subsequently shifted to Bowring Hospital for a post-mortem, where his wife Lini Roy and son Rohit arrived on Saturday. The police are examining whether the case falls under unnatural death or abetment to suicide. Investigators are collecting CCTV footage, office records, and any possible suicide notes or digital evidence from the office premises.

The Kerala IT department had been conducting search and questioning at Roy’s Bengaluru office for three consecutive days. Sources say Roy was being questioned daily and had reportedly been summoned from Dubai for further inquiries on January 28. His elder brother alleged that Roy was under extreme pressure from the agency, asserting, “He had no debt. The Income Tax officers will have to answer what happened that my brother took this step.”

CJ Roy, originally from Kerala, was a billionaire industrialist with an estimated net worth of around ₹9,000 crore. He owned a private jet and a collection of over 200 luxury cars, including 12 Rolls-Royces, Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari, Lamborghini Huracan and Aventador, McLaren, and Koenigsegg Agera. Known for his lavish lifestyle, Roy also produced four Malayalam films and had operations in Karnataka and Dubai.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced a high-level inquiry into Roy’s death, stating, “The truth will be found out,” and assured that all circumstances leading to the incident would be thoroughly investigated.

Sources close to Roy described his early fascination with luxury cars, recalling a childhood visit to a showroom in Bengaluru that fueled his ambition to own the world’s most expensive vehicles. By 36, he had purchased his first private jet without taking any bank loan. His entrepreneurial journey included building a vast real estate empire through Confident Group, active across Karnataka and Kerala.

Police continue to probe all angles, including the sequence of events during the IT searches, Roy’s daily questioning, and whether any harassment or undue pressure contributed to his death. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities expected to review documents, statements, and digital records in the coming days.
