Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 2 will officially reopen for passenger operations on October 26, 2025, after a comprehensive five-month upgrade that promises to revolutionize the travel experience with cutting-edge technology and enhanced facilities.
Key Features and Enhanced Passenger Experience
The revamped 40-year-old terminal introduces several game-changing innovations designed to streamline passenger flow and reduce waiting times:
Self Baggage Drop (SBD) System: Passengers can now independently check in their luggage by simply scanning their boarding pass, tagging bags, and dropping them off without counter assistance, reducing processing time from minutes to just 30 seconds.
India's First Autonomous Docking Bridges: Six new passenger boarding bridges featuring autonomous docking technology from South Korea automatically align with aircraft doors using sensors and laser guidance, eliminating manual processes and improving safety.
Modern Infrastructure Upgrades: The terminal showcases bright new interiors with modern ceilings, innovative skylight designs, upgraded flooring, and enhanced road connectivity for improved accessibility.
Operational Changes and Flight Capacity
Starting from the night of October 25-26, approximately 120 daily domestic flights operated by Air India and IndiGo will transition to the upgraded Terminal 2, helping ease congestion across Delhi Airport's network. This move aligns with the aviation winter schedule and is expected to optimize operations at India's busiest airport.
The reopening increases Delhi Airport's total annual passenger handling capacity to an impressive 109 million passengers, with Terminal 2 joining the fully operational Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.
Advanced Safety and Technology Systems
Terminal 2 features comprehensive mechanical and electrical improvements including:
-
Enhanced HVAC systems for optimal climate control
-
Advanced fire safety installations with modern detection systems
-
Reinforced electrical infrastructure ensuring uninterrupted operations
-
High-resolution Flight Information Display System (FIDS) providing real-time updates
-
Improved accessibility features for persons with reduced mobility
Strategic Vision for Future Aviation
"Terminal 2 is not just a facility upgrade—it's a complete reimagination of the passenger journey," stated Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL. The upgrade positions IGI Airport as a future-ready hub capable of handling India's rapidly growing air travel demands while delivering world-class passenger experiences.
The apron and airside areas, operational for over four decades, have also undergone significant refurbishment to accommodate increased aircraft traffic and ensure smoother ground operations.
This major infrastructure investment by GMR AERO-led Delhi International Airport Limited demonstrates India's commitment to aviation excellence and passenger-centric innovation in the rapidly expanding domestic aviation market.
