Delhi to Become Jam-Free: Tunnel from Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport Announced

The Central Government has approved road infrastructure projects worth ₹24,000 crore for Delhi. A key highlight is the construction of a tunnel connecting Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and make the city jam-free.

To reduce pollution in Delhi, the central government has provided assistance of crores of rupees to the Delhi government. This assistance includes the construction of a tunnel and an elevated road to connect Indira Gandhi International Airport. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta shared information about these schemes after meeting Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. He informed that the central government will build 128 km long road projects at a cost of Rs 24 thousand crore, which will directly benefit Delhi. Apart from this, a detailed project report of upcoming schemes has also been prepared.

The schemes that have been prepared to reduce vehicle congestion and control pollution in Delhi include the construction of an underground tunnel about 7 km long from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road. Additionally, an elevated road will be constructed from INA to the airport, which will also connect to Faridabad and Gurugram. Along with this, the highway connecting Delhi to Katra and Amritsar, which connects to the Urban Extension Road (UER), and the second extension of UER-2, which will connect Alipur to Tronica City and Delhi-Dehradun route, are also included in these plans. Apart from this, a feasibility study of the construction of a tunnel from Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport is also going on.

Rekha Gupta informed that important routes like Rohtak Road, Punjabi Bagh to Nangloi, Ashram to Badarpur and MG Road have now been handed over to the National Highways Authority (NHAI). NHAI will work to make these roads signal free, in which the Public Works Department (PWD) will also provide cooperation.

The CM informed that a detailed report of this project will be prepared soon, and NHAI will implement it on priority basis. Along with this, NHAI has approved Rs 150 crore for the construction of RUB (Road Under Bridge) and ROB (Road Over Bridge).

The Chief Minister informed that a road about 20 km long will be constructed from Indralok Metro Station to Sonipat along the Munak Canal. This project will be beneficial for the passengers traveling between Haryana and Delhi, who are currently using the highway only from Azadpur via Mukarba Chowk.

Proposed plan of the capital

● An underground tunnel will be constructed from Shiv Murti to National Mandela Road.

● An elevated road will be constructed from INA to the airport, which will be extended to Faridabad in future.

● The second extension of Urban Extension Road-2 will be done till Alipur Tronica City.

Caste census will be done in two phases, the first phase will start from October 1, 2026

Plans to be completed soon

The construction work of Dwarka Expressway is almost 98% complete.

The work of Urban Extension Road is progressing with a progress of 95%.

The work of Kalindi Kunj, Faridabad, Ballabhgarh, Sohna and Jewar Airport Link Road from DND Interchange is also 93% complete.
