Severe winter conditions continued to disrupt air travel across northern India on Wednesday, with dense fog and poor visibility forcing the cancellation of at least 148 flights at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). More than 150 flights were delayed, while two were diverted, according to airport authorities, marking one of the most significant weather-related disruptions this season.
IGIA, operated by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), handles around 1,300 flight movements daily. In a statement posted on X, DIAL said visibility conditions were gradually improving but warned that delays and cancellations could persist. “Our ground teams are working closely with airlines and other stakeholders to assist passengers and ensure smooth terminal operations,” the airport operator said.
The Union Civil Aviation Ministry also issued an advisory cautioning passengers that dense fog prevailing across parts of northern India could affect flight operations at several airports. Airlines were advised to manage schedules proactively, while passengers were urged to check flight status before heading to airports.
Weather-related disruptions were not limited to Delhi. Srinagar Airport also reported cancellations, with six flights grounded on Wednesday due to adverse conditions and operational constraints. Airport authorities said one IndiGo, three Air India, one Air India Express and one SpiceJet flight were cancelled. In a separate update, Air India Express flight IX 1271/1272 operating on the Jammu–Srinagar–Delhi sector was also cancelled in anticipation of deteriorating weather in Jammu.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) said dense fog was impacting operations at multiple airports in the region. “Low visibility may lead to flight delays. Passengers are advised to monitor airline updates and arrive earlier than usual,” the AAI said, adding that ground teams were deployed to assist travellers.
The widespread aviation disruption comes amid an intense winter spell across northern and central India. Heavy snowfall has been reported in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, including near the Sonamarg Tunnel and in Lahaul-Spiti, where temperatures have dropped to as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius. The impact of snowfall in the hills is being felt in the plains, with dense fog and cold wave conditions reported in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.
The India Meteorological Department has warned that a western disturbance is likely to remain active over the next two days, bringing rain in lower reaches of hilly states and heavy snowfall at higher altitudes. Fog alerts and cold wave warnings remain in place for several states, raising the likelihood of continued disruptions to air and rail services.
