Dhruva Kumar said that the trade agreement between Scotland, the UK, and India will prove to be a milestone in history
Jagran Desk
This deal will be a historic milestone,” says Dhruv Kumar, the chief architect of Scotland’s India strategy. The recently concluded India–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is, in his words, not just a diplomatic achievement, but a transformational moment for Scotland’s economy.
The deal places Scotland’s water resources, technological innovations, world-class universities, distillery industry, fisheries, cultural heritage, and industrial hubs at the heart of a £25.5 billion bilateral trade agreement.
Historic Breakthrough for Scotch Whisky
One of the most significant gains is for Scotch whisky. Until now, India imposed a hefty 150% import duty. The deal immediately slashes this to 75%, with a gradual reduction to 40% over the next 10 years. This is expected to boost UK beverage exports by £700 million and create over 2,200 new jobs in Speyside and Kilmalid distilleries.
India — the world’s largest whisky consumer (192 million bottles annually) — is becoming a lucrative, open market for Scottish brands. By 2050, these brands could reach an estimated 250 million high-income Indian consumers.
Wider Gains for Scottish Industries
-
Scottish Salmon will now enter India’s £2.8 trillion import market duty-free.
-
Luxury cars like Jaguar Land Rover will see tariffs drop from 110% to just 10% (under a quota system).
-
Aerospace giants such as Rolls-Royce will benefit from reduced trade barriers, empowering Glasgow’s advanced manufacturing sector.
-
A green energy alliance will emerge from India's net-zero goals combined with Scotland’s offshore wind expertise.
Strong Economic Boost for India Too
-
99% of Indian exports will now enter the UK with zero tariffs, unlocking up to $23 billion in new opportunities.
-
75,000 Indian professionals will be exempt from UK social security contributions for 3 years — saving India an estimated ₹40,000 crore annually.
-
Indian farmers gain access to the UK’s £37.5 billion agriculture market.
-
Unique Indian products like makhana, spices, and khadi will receive premium recognition and positioning.
Key Challenges Remain
-
India’s state-level excise policies might blunt the benefits for Scotch whisky.
-
The UK’s carbon border tax could hit Indian metal exporters.
-
Fintech collaboration will remain limited without flexibility in India’s data localisation policies.
More Than Just Trade — A Living Bridge
According to Dhruv Kumar, this agreement is not just a transaction between two nations — it’s a living bridge between Scotland’s innovation and India’s energy. He emphasizes the need for deeper green partnerships between regional allies like Maharashtra and Scotland.
With £6 billion in new investments and a potential £190 million GDP uplift, this agreement could become a blueprint for 21st-century trade.
“Scotland’s distilleries once powered the Industrial Revolution. Today, they energize a shared future — one that blends tradition with technology.” — Dhruv Kumar
